This International Women’s Day, we are actively reflecting on a powerful and transformative theme: Give to Gain.
At Patron Capital, we firmly believe that when we give vulnerable women a genuinely safe place to live, we deliver far more than just a roof over their heads. We provide unshakeable safety, profound dignity, and the vital stability they need to kickstart their healing journeys. In return, we gain incredibly empowered women who are building dynamic, independent futures completely free from abuse!
Through our groundbreaking Women in Safe Homes fund – a pioneering joint venture with Resonance; we use innovative social impact investment to purchase high quality homes for women desperately in need. By partnering with expert women’s sector and homelessness charities across the UK, we ensure survivors have immediate access to suitable, secure housing. For many, this is the ultimate lifeline.
Rethinking Recovery: The Power of Dispersed Housing
We know that true innovation requires looking beyond traditional methods. For many survivors – particularly those with additional needs, larger families, or teenage boys, traditional emergency style refuges simply do not work. While these communal settings offer essential immediate safety, they are not always accessible or appropriate for long term recovery.
That is exactly why our fund champions an innovative alternative: dispersed accommodation.
By purchasing self-contained homes located seamlessly within local communities, we provide a wider cohort of women with longer term stability. This forward thinking approach delivers tailored support, absolute privacy, and total independence, empowering women to rebuild their lives at their own pace.
One of our incredible housing partners driving this change is Refuge, the UK’s largest specialist domestic abuse charity. Through an ambitious pilot scheme in Warwickshire, the Women in Safe Homes fund has purchased 20 dispersed properties for Refuge, successfully housing over 90 women and their children to date!
Freya is one of Refuge’s inspiring tenants living in her new home in the county. Her journey perfectly illustrates why safe, dispersed accommodation is an absolute game-changer.
Freya’s Story: Finding Freedom and Space to Heal
Women fleeing domestic abuse face one of the most terrifying transitions imaginable: leaving behind a relationship and a home, often stepping into the complete unknown.
Before securing her new accommodation, Freya was sofa surfing to escape severe emotional and physical domestic abuse from family members. With nowhere else to turn, she found herself in a deeply vulnerable position.
Dispersed accommodation steps in to bridge this exact gap. Unlike traditional shared refuge spaces, these self-contained homes allow women to:
- Rebuild their lives with total privacy, eliminating the unique stresses of communal living.
- Maintain vital continuity with local services, schools, and employment.
- Access highly tailored, one-to-one support precisely when and where they need it.
- Grow their confidence and independence in a space they can truly call their own.
For Freya, stepping into her new home was a transformative moment. She was thrilled by the quality of the property and the immense relief of having her own space.
“I am so happy with the flat. It is really suitable for me, because of my autism and anxiety, I struggle to live with other people. This type of refuge accommodation is better because I can heal by myself, which I couldn’t do if I was sharing with others”.
Tailored Support for Complete Transformation
We understand that providing a physical property is only the first step. To create true digital success stories – or in this case, real-life success stories – we must pair outstanding properties with exceptional support.
Freya receives consistent, dedicated guidance from her Refuge Housing Support Worker.
“It’s nice to have someone come into the property regularly to check things over and keep the property safe for me to live in.”
Alongside this, her Floating Support Worker delivers weekly sessions, actively helping her navigate her new area and rebuild her life completely free from abuse. This comprehensive, wraparound support package includes:
- Registering with a new local GP.
- Accessing specialist domestic abuse counselling.
- Securing a comprehensive carers package through adult social care.
- Registering as homeless with the local council to plan for move-on accommodation.
- Creating robust safety plans for navigating areas where she might encounter perpetrators.
- Securing an occupational therapy referral and installing specialist equipment in her home.
- Actively placing bids to secure a permanent council property.
- Accessing vital food vouchers and securing benefits in her own name.
- Providing deep emotional support to process her past experiences.
Freya’s Support Worker notes an incredible transformation. Given the space to heal at her own pace, Freya has found herself again. Her PTSD symptoms have significantly reduced, and she feels genuinely secure.
“I just feel safe here, because of the support you all give in keeping the property safe, the no visitor rules as well as other security measures that are in place. Literally everything is perfect and I am really happy with it all. Everyone is so supportive and even when I’m away from the accommodation, I still feel safe and supported.”
Looking forward, Freya plans to resettle in a permanent property close to her current Refuge accommodation, eagerly continuing her vibrant life free from abuse.
Why Innovative Dispersed Accommodation Matters
We are incredibly proud to support models that actively break down barriers. A member of the Refuge dispersed accommodation team perfectly summarises why this innovative approach is so critical:
“The dispersed properties are a necessity for women who cannot access traditional refuge settings. Without the dispersed accommodation as an option, these women would not be able to flee abusive relationships or would have to reside in temporary hotel accommodations which often don’t have any cooking or washing facilities to meet their basic needs. Supporting women that have mobility needs, larger families, children or women with neurodivergent needs, women with pets or women with substance misuse are just a few examples of where our dispersed accommodation is a lifeline for those that have nowhere else safe to turn to when fleeing domestic abuse, as they would not be able to access traditional refuge. Instead, our accommodation provides them with a suitable, safe environment for them to live in and the support to regain their independence.
Without any immediate support network nearby, a brand-new area and lifestyle can feel incredibly overwhelming, but our regular ongoing support helps women to feel at ease in a new environment, helps them to gain a sense of community and safety and settle into an area they’re unfamiliar with. This support enables the women in our accommodation to feel supported and empowered to rebuild their lives free from abuse.”
