Safe, stable housing is so much more than shelter – it’s the launchpad for recovery, renewal, and boundless possibilities. At Patron Capital, we proudly champion this belief, driving innovative social impact that transforms lives. Providing a safe home creates the foundation for freedom and the power to rebuild with confidence, determination, and hope.
At our recent Women in Safe Homes fund AGM, we were thrilled to welcome Minke van Til, Managing Director of Ella’s, to share her powerful perspective. As a valued partner, Ella’s stands at the forefront of supporting women who have survived trafficking and sexual exploitation – delivering hope where it’s needed most. Minke’s message was electrifying: secure accommodation isn’t just a place to stay, it’s the springboard for real transformation. Together, our partnership is driving extraordinary, tangible change – offering women a future defined by stability, freedom, and the genuine opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Let’s dive into how Ella’s is shaking up the system – filling critical gaps with bold, holistic support and a relentless drive to empower women on their road to recovery. Together, our partnership combines vision and action, amplifying Ella’s impact so every survivor can reclaim her future with strength and confidence.
Bridging a Critical Gap in Survivor Care
Ella’s stands as a bold answer to a deep and urgent gap in survivor care. When women in the UK are identified as survivors of trafficking, they are initially referred to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) for short-term support. But too often, this window closes before lasting stability can take root – especially for women who have endured the most intense forms of exploitation. That’s where Ella’s breaks the mold, stepping in with unwavering commitment and the specialist support required for genuine, long-term recovery.
True, lasting recovery doesn’t happen overnight – it demands unwavering stability, expert support, and a sanctuary where survivors can truly breathe and belong. When women are given that foundation, shaped by specialist intervention and genuine care, powerful transformation becomes possible. This is the first step toward reclaiming independence and building a future bursting with hope.
Ella’s has stepped up with bold ambition – to see every survivor set free from slavery and exploitation, and to ensure they have the tools to truly reclaim their lives. Their mission fires on all cylinders: helping women move beyond crisis to build futures filled with security, independence, and dignity. The demand for Ella’s support is sky-high. Referrals flood in, especially from those who’ve slipped through the gaps after short-term state assistance ends. For countless women, Ella’s is the last line of hope – transforming lives when nowhere else will.
A Holistic, Person-Centred Approach to Recovery
Exceptional housing only reaches its true potential when it’s paired with passionate, personalised support. That’s exactly what Ella’s delivers – and we’re proud that three of their seven safe houses in London are possible thanks to the Women in Safe Homes fund. These vibrant homes have become havens for nine women and two children, offering more than just safety – they create an environment where families can build resilience, rediscover confidence, and take their first bold steps toward a brighter future.
But Ella’s impact doesn’t stop at their safe houses – their energetic outreach programmes ripple across communities, meeting women and families where they are. Whether a survivor finds sanctuary under Ella’s roof or taps into their dynamic outreach, every woman receives dedicated, one-to-one support crafted for her unique journey. It’s a bold, empowering commitment: nobody is left behind, and every survivor gets the tailored care and encouragement she needs to rebuild – and thrive.
Every survivor takes a remarkable journey shaped by her own strength and dreams. At Ella’s, support isn’t one-size-fits-all – it’s tailored, dynamic, and designed to help each woman truly rise. Their team crafts bespoke support plans around every individual’s needs, building a rock-solid safety net that covers everything from education and language to wellbeing and life skills. With this dynamic, holistic approach, women gain the tools and confidence needed to chart a whole new future – thriving, achieving, and taking back control on their own terms.
- Access to education and crucial English language courses
- Expert help navigating complex immigration and legal processes
- Dedicated support to secure essential benefits and healthcare
- Targeted mental health and wellbeing therapies
- Practical life skills training and confidence-building activities
- Engaging group workshops delivered alongside specialist partner organisations
This wraparound, trauma-informed approach does more than support survival – it ignites transformation. Women reclaim their voices, rebuild their confidence, and step boldly into a future defined by hope, strength, and possibility. At Patron Capital, we celebrate each empowered step forward, knowing that with the right support, women don’t just heal – they thrive.
Overcoming the Property Challenge Through Partnership
Securing high-quality, long-term homes is no small feat – especially for a charity like Ella’s, powered by a dedicated team of just 25. Competing head-to-head in the private rental market, wrestling with leases, and managing unpredictable costs can quickly eat up the time and energy meant for life-changing support. That’s why our work with the Women in Safe Homes fund is so game-changing: we cut through those barriers, empowering Ella’s to focus on what matters most – providing safety, hope, and fresh starts for women who need it most.
That’s where Patron Capital and the Women in Safe Homes fund leap into action – reshaping the future through smart, purpose-driven investment. By harnessing the power of social impact capital, we strip away barriers and free charities like Ella’s to pour their energy where it matters most: changing lives on the frontline. Our commitment isn’t just about providing property; it’s about pioneering a more effective approach that multiplies possibilities and accelerates real progress for women who need it most.
As Minke enthusiastically shared at the AGM:
“To have the Women in Safe Homes fund as a partner in that has just been incredible and has really accelerated our growth.”
With the backing of our fund, Ella’s has accelerated its growth – rapidly expanding its reach and securing even more exceptional homes for women in need. We’re not just adding properties; we’re creating welcoming sanctuaries where dignity and safety are front and centre, giving every woman a true place to call her own.
“Our homes are often the first safe place they’ve had, maybe ever… some of the women we work with have been in exploitation since childhood, so this is the first place they can call their own. It’s got to be really lovely and beautiful.”
Katy’s Story: The Power of a Secure Foundation
At the AGM, Minke brought Katy’s journey to life – an unforgettable example of why immediate access to safe housing is nothing short of transformative. Katy’s experience is a vivid reminder that when women are given a secure place to call home, they unlock the strength to break free from fear and step boldly into a new chapter. Safe housing doesn’t just change circumstances; it fuels hope, empowers families, and sets the stage for futures built on strength and possibility.
Shortly after moving to the UK, Katy’s husband became highly controlling and violent. Trapped with a toddler and a newborn baby, she made the courageous decision to flee. She left terrified, holding her children, and with absolutely nowhere safe to go.
“I felt like there was no step forward, nothing that would save me.”
With incredible bravery, Katy reached out to the police – and that single act of courage opened the door to real transformation. Authorities connected her with Ella’s, and she soon found safety in one of the family homes delivered through the Women in Safe Homes fund. At that moment, Katy and her children weren’t just given shelter – they gained an empowering foundation, a fresh start and the unwavering support needed to reclaim hope and rebuild their lives.
“I closed the door and I felt happy. I said, ‘Thank you, God.’”
With the door closed behind her, Katy and her children were wrapped in true, life-changing protection – a safe haven that marked the start of their new journey. Supported every step of the way by a dedicated key worker, Katy tackled challenges head-on: resolving her immigration status, unlocking essential benefits, rebuilding daily living skills, and finally embracing the chance to heal from trauma. This is the power of real support in action – empowering Katy to take bold steps forward and reclaim her future with strength and hope.
“Before, I was scared of everything. I wasn’t free inside. Now I’m being myself, bit by bit.”
Now, Katy steps into her future with energy and purpose. She’s boldly planning to launch her own beauty business – determined to create lasting security for her children and embrace every opportunity ahead. Her journey is a shining example of what’s possible when women are equipped to build their new lives with confidence and independence.
“I used to feel weak. Now I know that I am strong.”
Before the support of the Women in Safe Homes fund, Ella’s was only able to provide housing for single women. Our game-changing partnership turned the tide – now, together, we’re making it possible for women with children to find safe, welcoming homes where they can rebuild as a family. It’s all about keeping resilient families like Katy’s together, empowering them to heal, grow, and craft vibrant new futures in total security.

The scale of need is staggering – and it’s growing every day. Ella’s faces an onslaught of referrals, a vivid signal of just how widespread and urgent the challenge of exploitation remains. The sheer volume shines a spotlight on an undeniable truth: the demand for safe, long-term homes far outpaces supply. It’s a rallying call to innovate, act boldly, and ensure that every survivor gets the support and sanctuary she deserves.
